DAYS 2–10: EXPEDITION CRUISE

Over the next nine days, we’ll journey through some of the Kimberley’s most iconic and remote destinations—where ancient rock art, thundering waterfalls, rare wildlife encounters, and powerful tidal phenomena await. Each location reveals a different facet of this remarkable region, offering a rich blend of natural beauty, Indigenous culture, and adventure.

NOTE: The order of visits may vary depending on your voyage direction and prevailing weather and tidal conditions.

KING GEORGE RIVER & FALLS (OOMARI FALLS)

Fed by waters draining from the Gardner Plateau, Oomari – King George Falls are the tallest twin falls in Western Australia, plunging 80 metres over ancient sandstone cliffs. We cruise through steep-sided gorges carved over millions of years, arriving at the base of the falls. During waterfall season, we may cruise beneath the misty spray by Zodiac, in the dry season, marvel at intricate honeycomb erosion patterns in the surrounding cliffs. The site holds deep cultural significance for the Balangarra people.

VANSITTART BAY (BANJAL)

Home to culturally and historically important sites, Vansittart Bay includes the remarkable Gwion Gwion (Bradshaw) rock art at Ngula – Jar Island, believed to be up to 20,000 years old. These delicate, stylised figures are among Australia’s oldest known artworks. We also visit the Anjo Peninsula to view the well-preserved wreckage of a US Air Force C-53 Sky trooper, which crash-landed during WWII.

MITCHELL FALLS, WINYALKAN & SWIFT BAY

Deep within the sandstone escarpments lies the iconic Punamii-Uunpuu – Mitchell Falls, cascading over four tiers into emerald pools below. You may choose to take an optional scenic helicopter flight for breathtaking aerial views. On foot, sandstone terraces offer natural lookouts. At Swift Bay, explore a series of Wandjina and Gwion Gwion rock art galleries tucked into coastal caves.

MONTGOMERY REEF (YOWJAB)

Covering over 300 square kilometres, Montgomery Reef rises from the ocean twice daily with the retreating Kimberley tides. Water cascades from its surface in rivulets and waterfalls, revealing rock pools teeming with marine life. Join our Zodiac and Xplorer tenders to witness this dynamic event up close, as turtles, dugongs, and sea birds feed on the exposed reef. Our Expedition Team will interpret the reef’s unique ecosystem and formation.

DOUBTFUL BAY & RAFT POINT (NGUMBREE)

Doubtful Bay is traditional country of the Worrora people, custodians of the Wandjina belief system. At Ngumbirri – Raft Point, visit extraordinary Wandjina rock art galleries high on the escarpment, overlooking the sea. Weather permitting, we journey to Red Cone Creek to reach Ruby Falls, where a short climb over natural rock formations leads to a refreshing swim in a secluded freshwater pool. We may also explore the Sale River by Xplorer if time allows.

HORIZONTAL FALLS (GARAANNGADDIM)

One of the Kimberley’s most iconic features, the Horizontal Falls are created when the region’s massive tides force seawater through a narrow gorge in the McLarty Ranges, creating a spectacular sideways waterfall. Conditions permitting, take an exhilarating Zodiac ride through the rapids, a highlight of the expedition.

PRINCE FREDERICK HARBOUR & BIGGE ISLAND (WUUYURU)

Set against dramatic escarpments, Prince Frederick Harbour is dotted with mangrove-lined islands and monsoon rainforest. Cruise up Porosus Creek to spot white-bellied sea eagles, mudskippers, and mangrove crabs. Later, visit nearby Lumbarrni Island to explore Indigenous rock art sites, and learn about the cultural heritage of the Wunambal people.

PRINCE REGENT RIVER & CAREENING BAY (WUNBUNG-GU)

Following a straight fault line, the Prince Regent River leads us to King Cascade, a beautiful, tiered waterfall flowing over layers of Kimberley sandstone, lush with mosses and grasses. Nearby at Careening Bay, we view the Mermaid Boab Tree, still bearing the inscription “HMC Mermaid 1820,” carved by the ship’s carpenter during repairs led by Lieutenant Phillip Parker King.

TALBOT BAY & BUCCANEER ARCHIPELAGO

In Talbot Bay, discover dramatic geology in Cyclone Creek, where rock folds and ancient strata reveal the area’s violent natural history. We cruise through the Iron Islands, pass by Koolan Island, and enjoy sunset drinks at Nares Point—a stunning conclusion to the day amidst 2-billion-year-old rock formations of the Buccaneer Archipelago.

THE LACEPEDE ISLANDS

Subject to tide and weather, we visit the Lacepede Islands, a Class-A Nature Reserve and vital bird nesting site. The islands support tens of thousands of brown boobies, roseate terns, and are an important breeding ground for green turtles. Explore the lagoons by Zodiac or Xplorer, with opportunities for birdwatching and spotting marine life in this pristine sanctuary.

MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch Dinner

OVERNIGHT: Coral Expeditions Vessel

CORAL EXPEDITIONS FAQ

This package is subject to Coral Expeditions Terms and Conditions.

What are the health requirements for the trips?

We advise that guests carry a current record of allergies or any chronic medical issues and the telephone number for their physician’s 24-hour answering service. As our itineraries cover remote regions and are active by nature, they may not be suitable for those with serious medical conditions. It is important that known medical conditions and treatments should be disclosed to reservations staff at the time of booking. In the event of a remote area emergency, medical history can be essential information for our team.

What are the mobility requirements for expedition cruising?
Coral Expeditions journeys to remote regions where the travel experience occurs on open seas and where shore excursions involve rugged terrain, small boat transfers, and limited infrastructure and facilities. Guests must have a moderate level of mobility and fitness to safely participate. This includes the ability to:

  • Embark and disembark tenders with minimal assistance.
  • Walk on uneven terrain such as rocky shorelines, nature tracks, and beaches.
  • Navigate flights of stairs and decks on a moving vessel safely.

Guests with mobility or medical limitations should carefully consider travel and consult us before booking. For safety reasons, crew may deny boarding or restrict participation in certain activities at their sole discretion.

While we aim to accommodate guests, expedition cruising requires a level of physical capability to fully enjoy and safely undertake the experience. Your safety, and that of fellow guests and crew, is our top priority.

Is there a doctor or nurse onboard?

We do not travel with a doctor or nurse on our domestic voyages. Our crew are medically trained as a requirement of their roles to meet Australian Maritime Safety Standards. We also have remote support from specialist organisations like the Royal Flying Doctor Service and various state and territory health facilities.

We have more details in our Terms and Conditions http://coralexpeditions.com/au/terms-conditions/

On international voyages with more than 100 persons onboard, either a medical doctor or a Nurse Practitioner will be travelling with us. They will be on hand to attend to COVID-related testing and monitoring and to assist with any illness or injury experienced on the voyage. They will not be available for general or non-voyage-specific health consultations.

What should I pack for my expedition cruise?

When it comes time for the exciting time of packing for your cruise, our packing lists are available to assist you. More specific information regarding weather conditions in your destination is included in your Cruise Documentation which you will receive prior to your cruise. Find your expedition packing list below.

Kimberly Packing List

Are there laundry services onboard?

Laundry services are available onboard. Please note that these services are limited to basic laundry only. Laundry bags and forms are stored in your wardrobe for collection by your cruise attendants. Charges for this service will be posted to your onboard account. As the service is for laundering only, please ask the hospitality staff if you require an iron and ironing board.

What is the Wi-Fi connectivity onboard?

Packages for the premium service are available from our Purser Desk, at a cost of $10 for 2GB, $50 for 10GB and $80 for 20GB.

As with any satellite service, speeds may be slower than at home, and brief outages may occur during satellite transitions. Connectivity is strongest in public areas and during low-usage times. We recommend reviewing Starlink’s coverage map for your journey to check service availability in different regions: https://starlink.com/au/map

Am I allowed to fly my drone on the cruise?
No. We have a no drone policy onboard owing to the impact on the ship’s electronic and navigation equipment, permit restrictions and remote area safety considerations.

What is included in the cruise fare?

Your cruise fare includes:

When do I receive the photos from my voyage?

Following your expedition, you will receive a link by email to free download the images taken throughout your voyage by our Expedition Team. Please make sure that you have provided our reservations team with your relevant email address.

These photos can often take up to 4 weeks to receive and be sent. If you don’t see your voyage on our Guest Image Gallery page, that means it hasn’t been emailed yet.

Where can I find pre-cruise accommodation in Broome?

As accommodation in Broome is known to sell out quickly, for Broome departures guests can organise pre-cruise accommodation in Perth or Darwin and fly into Broome on the day of departure. There are daily early morning flights into Broome from Perth and Darwin that would allow connection with the ship’s departure in the late afternoon.

What if I am unwell before departure?

We advise any guest experiencing symptoms of a respiratory illness or communicable disease, such as a cold or flu, within the five days leading up to the cruise to closely monitor their condition and refrain from traveling if unwell. Should you decide not to travel, please notify our reservations team, and we will assist you by providing a letter for an insurance claim.

Walks/Hikes on this Expedition

Most walks are leisurely strolls along beaches, however, there are some more strenuous walks on offer. An alternative excursion will always be offered in place of higher impact walks.

The Expedition Team will advise walking conditions and requirements prior to each excursion. Should you have any physical limitations or mobility issues, please notify our reservations team in advance prior to your departure.

Swimming on this Expedition

Swimming opportunities are governed by the rhythm of the tides, offering a unique and ever-changing experience. Reaching these hidden gems often involves a rock ascent, adding an element of quest to your swim.

Darwin Post Cruise Transfer:

Fitness and Mobility Requirements for Expedition Cruising

Coral Expeditions journeys to remote regions where the travel experience occurs on open seas and where shore excursions involve rugged terrain, small boat transfers, and limited infrastructure and facilities. Guests must have a moderate level of mobility and fitness to safely participate. This includes the ability to:

  • Embark and disembark tenders with minimal assistance.
  • Walk on uneven terrain such as rocky shorelines, nature tracks, and beaches.
  • Navigate stairs and decks on a moving vessel safely.
