Itinerary

Day 1: Oslo ~ Longyearbyen

Your adventure begins with a flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen, the northernmost town in the world. This remote yet vibrant frontier settlement is home to more snowmobiles than people and serves as the gateway to the Arctic wilderness.

Upon arrival, you’ll have the opportunity to explore Longyearbyen at your own pace. Wander through its colourful streets, visit a local café, or take in the stunning landscapes surrounding this unique town. In the evening, unwind and enjoy a relaxing night before the next stage of your journey.

MEALS: Nil

OVERNIGHT: 4 Star Hotel, Longyearbyen

Day 2: Longyearbyen – Embark Ship

After breakfast, take the opportunity to explore Longyearbyen, a colourful Arctic town surrounded by stunning wilderness. The town is small and easy to navigate on foot, allowing you to soak in its unique charm at your own pace. As you stroll down the main street, keep an eye out for the Svalbard reindeer, which often wander through town. Unlike other wild reindeer, these ones are surprisingly tame and curious.

Later in the day, before boarding your ship and continuing your Arctic adventure, you’ll join an included excursion to learn more about this fascinating polar region. If you’d like to delve even deeper into Longyearbyen’s history and landscapes, consider taking part in our optional Pre-Programme for an extended experience.

MEALS: Breakfast, Dinner

OVERNIGHT: MS Spitsbergen or MS Fram

Day 3: Ny-Ålesund

Today, you’ll experience the peaceful beauty of Ny-Ålesund and its surrounding fjords, including Krossfjord and Kongsfjord. This remote Arctic settlement is one of the northernmost in the world, offering a rare opportunity to disconnect from everyday distractions. Due to the nearby geodetic station operated by the Norwegian Mapping Authority, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be switched off, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the stunning natural surroundings.

Once a mining town, Ny-Ålesund is now an important centre for global scientific and climate research. It was also the starting point for Roald Amundsen’s historic expedition north in the airship Norge. As you explore, you’ll see remnants of its past alongside the modern research stations that continue to study the Arctic today.

The surrounding fjords offer breathtaking glacial landscapes, and we’ll take every opportunity to make the most of them. If conditions allow, we’ll launch our small expedition boats for a closer look at the towering glaciers, go ashore for a hike, or cruise the icy waters to soak in the rugged beauty of this extraordinary region.

MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

OVERNIGHT: MS Spitsbergen or MS Fram

Days 4-5: Northwest Spitsbergen National Park

Over the next two days, you’ll immerse yourself in the untouched Arctic wilderness of Northwest Spitsbergen National Park. This breathtaking region is home to towering mountains, vast glaciers, and remote offshore islands. As we navigate through this pristine landscape, we’ll keep a lookout for Arctic wildlife, including whales, seals, walruses, and reindeer. If we’re particularly fortunate, we might even catch a glimpse of a polar bear from the ship’s Observation Deck.

One of the highlights of this area is Kongsfjord, where massive glaciers calve into the sea, creating a dramatic and ever-changing landscape. Throughout our time in the park, we’ll take advantage of every opportunity for adventure. If conditions allow, we’ll launch our kayaks to paddle among the ice, use our small expedition boats to explore up close, go ashore for guided hikes, or even participate in a meaningful beach clean-up to help preserve this fragile environment.

MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

OVERNIGHT: MS Spitsbergen or MS Fram

Day 6: Attempting the Ice Edge

If conditions allow, today we’ll sail north, aiming to cross the 80th parallel and reach the shifting ice edge of the polar ice cap. This remarkable transition zone between open sea and drifting pack ice is constantly changing, creating a breathtaking and surreal Arctic landscape. From the ship, you’ll have excellent opportunities to spot wildlife, including seals and walruses resting on the glistening ice floes.

Should conditions permit, we’ll lower our expedition boats into the water for an unforgettable close-up experience among the floating ice. However, the ice edge is not a fixed boundary—it moves depending on the season and weather. During the summer months, from May to August, the ice retreats further towards the North Pole, which may make it unreachable for us. If that happens, we’ll explore Svalbard’s dramatic deep fjords, towering glaciers, and rugged coastal scenery instead.

For those travelling in late July and August, this is also a magical time when Arctic wildflowers bloom, transforming the tundra into a vibrant display of colour.

MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

OVERNIGHT: MS Spitsbergen or MS Fram

Days 7-8: Eastern Svalbard

The next two days will be a true Arctic adventure as we explore the remote and wild landscapes of Eastern Spitsbergen. If sea ice conditions allow, we’ll venture into the frozen seascapes of the Eastern Svalbard Nature Reserve, where some of the region’s most incredible wildlife can be found.

We have high hopes of spotting the elusive polar bear, often seen roaming the ice in search of food. In the Hinlopen Strait, we’ll also be on the lookout for walruses and large colonies of seabirds, including Brünnich’s Guillemots. Depending on conditions, we may travel south to Freemansundet and Kapp Lee or use our small expedition boats to reach the remote islands of Edgeøya and Barentsøya.

In true expedition style, our route will be flexible, adapting to the weather and ice conditions. Be ready for adventure—whether it’s exhilarating landings, guided hikes, or peaceful kayak trips in the icy waters. If ice blocks our passage through the Hinlopen Strait, we’ll instead explore the dramatic fjords, mighty glaciers, and stunning landscapes of western Svalbard, ensuring just as much excitement and discovery.

MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

OVERNIGHT: MS Spitsbergen or MS Fram

Days 9-10: South Spitsbergen National Park

As our expedition cruise continues south, we’ll explore the stunning landscapes of Hornsund, one of Svalbard’s most breathtaking fjords. The vibrant Arctic vegetation gives way to towering, snow-covered mountains, creating a spectacular backdrop. Keep an eye out from the deck for seals and whales, as well as Mount Hornsundtind, the highest peak in the area. You may also witness glaciers dramatically calving into the sea—a truly unforgettable sight.

Next, we’ll journey to the majestic Bellsund, where rugged, snowcapped mountains rise above the coastline. The towering cliffs here are home to vast colonies of seabirds, including auks, guillemots, and Northern Fulmars, while Arctic foxes and Svalbard reindeer roam below. As we explore, you’ll also see remnants of early mining settlements and learn about Wanny Woldstad, Svalbard’s first female trapper, whose pioneering spirit left a mark on the region’s history.

As always in the Arctic, our activities will be shaped by the ever-changing weather conditions. Your Expedition Team will carefully assess the conditions each day to determine the best opportunities for exploration, ensuring an exciting and immersive experience.

MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

OVERNIGHT: MS Spitsbergen or MS Fram

Day 11: Longyearbyen – Disembark Ship ~ Oslo

Your Arctic adventure comes to an end today as we arrive back in Longyearbyen. After an unforgettable journey through Svalbard’s breathtaking landscapes, you’ll transfer to the airport for your flight home.

As you leave, you’ll take with you a deeper understanding of the Arctic—its wildlife, history, polar ice, and the impacts of climate change. More importantly, you’ll carry the memories of an incredible expedition filled with unique experiences and awe-inspiring moments.

If you’re not quite ready to say goodbye to the Arctic, consider extending your stay with our optional post-programme, giving you more time to explore this remarkable region.

DESTINATION & PASSPORT REQUIREMENTS:

Exploring the world shouldn’t be stressful, and with each of our unique destinations having different entry requirements (Identification, Visa, Vaccination Status, etc.) it can be confusing to get the right information for your passport. This is why we have pulled together all the information with the help of our partners at Smartvel to ensure you have everything you need to plan your next adventure with us.

Like with any international travel, A valid passport is essential, as it’s the only accepted identification document. The passport validity must be in accordance with national requirements in the country/countries you will visit AND have a minimum of 6 months remaining validity at the end of your cruise.

To comply with clearance requirements in some destinations, we collect guests’ passports during check-in. Please be assured that your passport is kept in a secure location throughout the expedition cruise and will be returned to you at the end of your stay with us.

SMARTVEL TRAVEL TOOL:
To ensure you are ready for your upcoming expedition cruise, our partnership with Smartvel means you can find out the specific destination requirements for you.

The portal will confirm the specific destination requirements for your trip (Inc. Passport, Visa, Vaccination Requirements, Covid-19 Requirements)

Carefully read the requirements and select the ‘+’ next to ‘travel documents’ to find specific destination requirements (Inc. Passport, Visa, Vaccination Requirements, and COVID-19 requirements.

If you are transiting through another country, fill out the ‘transit’ section to find out the required documents.

Should you have any issues finding your requirements, please see the additional destination requirement information below.

Please Note: We are unable to accept any liability if you are denied access to a flight or entry into a country or are otherwise affected by difficulties or costs resulting from your passport not being approved or if you have not obtained the required documentation. It is your responsibility to ensure that you comply with any mandatory visa or travel documentation that is required at the time of travel.

MEDICAL SCREENING FORM:

At HX Hurtigruten Expeditions – we explore some of the world’s most remote locations and as such,in many of these locations, sophisticated medical services are few and far between. Medical care at sea is limited, and often emergency sea and air services may also be inaccessible, particularly in the polar regions. It is therefore vital that you make us aware of any current or past health issues.
The Health, Safety and well-being of you our guests and on-board crew are our top priority, and we want to ensure that all our guests are fit for travel. On board all our ships, we will have a qualified physician, which have a small, limited medical facility with basic medical supplies and equipment. Still, that makes it more difficult to diagnose and treat even the simplest conditions. This often leads to missed diagnosis, worsening conditions, a greater burden of chronic disease, and in some cases, unnecessary costly medical disembarkations.

Our expeditions often explore remote regions, where sophisticated medical services are not readily available. To minimize the risks to your health, it’s vital that guests on Antarctic sailings make our medical partner, Vikand, aware of any current or past health issues via a Medical Screening Form.

The form is assessed by Vikand, a maritime medical specialist.

As such we require all guests (including children) to submit and complete the Medical Screening Form before departure to Antarctica.

How to complete the Medical Screening Form?

All forms consist of two sections – The guest section and the Doctor’s section. Both sections need to be filled in and signed. If your own doctor refuses to sign the form, please contact an alternative doctor, or use online doctor services to fill in the form. Vikand Medicals is also offering a digital appointment service to support the Medical Screening Form process. This appointment can be booked through the Vikand portal.

The Medical Screening Form can be filled out by a doctor and by a DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) or Physician’s Assistant (PA).

People who can NOT fill out a Medical Screening Form:

Nurse Practitioner

Advance Nurse Practitioner/ Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)

Pharmacist

Nurse (RN or RNA)

EMTs

Or any other medical-related professional who does not have a doctor’s certificate/ licence.

Upon submitting your Medical Screening Form, you will receive an e-mail confirmation to the e-mail included within your submission form – please also check Spam / Junk Folders as they could appear here. If you still haven’t received any confirmation within an hour of submitting your form, please contact Hurtigruten Customer Service, and we can get a confirmation e-mail sent to you.
If you have submitted your Medical Screening Form within 4-8 weeks from departure, you should expect to receive the results within 3 working days (if submitted more than 8 weeks out, it might take longer for results to come through). If the screening team has a doubt about the passenger’s safety to join the Expedition sailing to a remote destination, an additional week might be needed to get a second opinion.

Please note: We are only accepting the Medical Screening Form available through the Vikand portal which has been specially designed for HX Hurtigruten Expedition sailings to remote destinations.
Appointments with Vikand

Vikand Medicals is also offering a digital appointment service to support the Medical Screening Form process.

This appointment can be booked through the Vikand portal

The cost for an appointment with Vikand’s online doctor is 165 EUR, which is to be made payable at the time of booking – Vikand accepts both Visa and Mastercard. (In case of cancellation within 24 hours from the booked time or missed appointment, there is a service fee of 50 EUR which is non-refundable.)

Once you have made your appointment booking, you will receive a confirmation e-mail, that will include all the details of the online meeting room. Here, you will meet with one of Vikand’s doctors for your digital appointment.

Please Note: When you submit the Medical Screening Form, you will receive a Submission ID – which is your form’s tracking ID. When uploading the Doctor’s section of your medical form, or when using Vikand’s digital appointment service, it is important that you use this ID to ensure both sections of the Medical Screening Form are linked together. If you don’t use the Submission ID, this can delay the process and approval of your medical screening.

SHIP MANIFEST INFORMATION FORM:

All guests joining an expedition cruise must submit the Ship Manifest Information Form no later than eight weeks before embarkation.

GDPR & Data Protection

In completing this form, you are providing us with personal information which we process in accordance with the GDPR and our Privacy Policy. The information contained in sections 1-5 is essential information that is processed either on the basis of contractual necessity or in order to comply with legal obligations placed on us. The information in section 6 is not essential but may help us to make your trip more comfortable. By providing us with this information, you are giving us your explicit consent to process that data for this purpose. You can see more information about how we handle your data by following the link here.

VACCINATIONS AND VIRUSES:

The safety of our guests, our employees, and the communities we visit is our priority. We’ve partnered with experts in health and safety to design and implement protocols and procedures across our expedition fleet. You may require vaccinations for your expedition. Please consult your doctor for information on the vaccines you need for your expedition.

Yellow fever

Certain parts of South and Central America, along with our West African destinations, are located in what is classified as the “Yellow Fever endemic zones”. This means all travellers above the age of 9 months must receive the yellow fever vaccination before travelling to these regions. Please note this does not include travellers only visiting Antarctica.

The certificate for the yellow fever vaccination is only valid from 10 days after you receive the vaccination. If you have not had the vaccine in time, you may be denied entry to these areas or instructed to quarantine for up to 6 days. If such a situation occurs, Hurtigruten Expeditions cannot accept any liability.

If you need a vaccination certificate for the country you are visiting, but you are not able to have the vaccine due to medical reasons, contact a yellow fever vaccination centre or your doctor. They may provide you with an exemption certificate, which may be accepted by officials in countries that usually require a vaccination certificate.

Zika virus

Zika virus is also detected in Central and South America and Africa so we advise you to talk to your doctor to understand the risks, especially if you are trying to get or are pregnant.

Additional Information

When travelling to countries known to have a risk of yellow fever or Zika virus transmission, we also advise guests to ensure they bring suitable long-sleeved shirts and pants to wear when out on an expedition along with their own supply of insect repellent.

We also recommend seeking medical advice about yellow fever and Zika virus as it is a mandatory requirement for some areas in South and Central America as well as West Africa. You can find out more information about your destination via these links here:
